While living on Okinawa for 2 years I learned that the people of the island respected themselves by respecting those around them. They were very open and welcoming. I observed how they lived with minimal necessities and how they took care of the things they had. I watched them work just making enough to care for their families. They didn't ask anything of you and expected nothing. They raised their children to be respectful of the parents, grandparents, teachers, neighbors, friends and each other. They never forced themselves upon you by wanting something. They were good neighbors and friends. The island is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and our experiences there remain at the top of my most treasured memories.
