About My Personal Life November 2003
This past year has been full of ups and
downs for me. In July 2002, I began
working as an AmeriCorps*Vista
volunteer. It was supposed to be for
at least a year but I left in April
2003 to pursue another job
opportunity. As part of my duties as
an AmeriCorps* Vista volunteer, I went
out into the community making
presentations about disability related
issues. I spoke to human service
providers, parents, the general
community, and of course, self
advocates (people with disabilities).
Some of the topics I spoke about
included "People First" language (how
to talk to or about a person with the
disability), self determination
(choices and responsibility), as well
as many others. Besides going out and
making presentations, some of my other
responsibilities included serving on
boards and committees and attending
meetings and anything else I was asked
to do related to disabilities. This
